Roughneck is the acclaimed solo project from maverick British guitarist Eddie Roberts, founder and leader of the New Mastersounds. The album combines firing hard bop, beautiful modal space and nu-jazz beats to create a sound described by Parisian label Le Maquis as "St Germain with attitude".
Jazzwise magazine album review:
"Inspiring solo project from the Swansea-born, Leeds-based guitarist, producer, writer and bandleader Eddie Roberts. Best known as the founder and leader of The New Mastersounds, Roughneck draws upon a number of formative influences notably Grant Green, Wes Montgomery and Jimmy McGriff and with the addition of modern beats, subtle studio edits and the odd remix, takes the soul jazz sound into the 21st century. The antithesis of acid jazz noodling, Roberts is an incisive and dynamic player with a capacious bag of tricks. Standout track ‘New Life’, an archetypal modal vehicle driven relentlessly onwards by the powerhouse drumming of Simon Allen, also happens to be the most Grant Green-esque of the collection. Its unison guitar/piano head and alternating two-chord pattern strongly call to mind Green’s consummate ‘Cease The Bombing’. Tracks such as Diggin’ Around and Mr E amply demonstrate that Roberts can also pen a mean horn chart. Other highlights include covers of Stanley Turrentine’s classic Sugar featuring full-bodied vocalist Iain Mackenzie and Eminem’s Lose Yourself (from the film 8 Mile)."
